Excessive at watching TV can trigger diabetes

How many hours a day do you spend in front of televisions and computers without moving? Be careful, watch television more than the recommended time, ie for two hours every day are hazardous to health in the long run.

Researchers at Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) revealed excessive television viewing associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and premature death.

"The message is simple. Limiting television time can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and premature death significantly," said senior author Frank Hu, associate professor of nutrition and epidemiology at HSPH.

He continued, "We should not only increase physical activity, but also reduce passive behaviors, especially prolonged television watching," he added as quoted by the Times of India.

During Hu's study and a study author Anders Grontved, conducted a meta-analysis, namely the systematic assessment of all studies published 1970-2011 that links to watch TV with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and premature death.

Eight large prospective study from the United States, Europe, and Australia are also included in the meta-analysis. The results showed that more than two hours watching television per day increased the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. While watching television more than three hours a day increases the risk of premature death.

"Passive lifestyle such as excessive television viewing clearly an important risk factor for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease," added Grontved.

This study has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
